team.Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the
Sr. Director, Accounting and Controller is responsible for
overseeing Share Our Strength's day-to-day accounting group and
operations. The Sr. Director, Accounting and Controller will be a
lead member of the financial management team and is responsible for
establishing, monitoring, and enforcing effective internal
controls, policies, and procedures to ensure the protection of the
organization's assets and the integrity and accuracy of the
organization's financial reports and transactions. The position
requires an experienced finance professional with excellent
interpersonal and communication skills who can work effectively
across organizational and functional teams. Candidates must be
familiar with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and
practices in a non-profit organization, although those with
comparable experience in the private sector or a leading audit firm
are encouraged to apply.This position is preferably based in
Washington, DC (Hybrid-2 days per week), but could be fully remote
for the right candidate living outside of the DC area 30 miles or
more. If fully remote, it will be expected to travel to the DC
Office 3-4 times per year and onboarding will be held in the D.C.
Office.The position offers a salary range of $135k-$150k. Exact
compensation within the stated salary range may vary based on
skills, experience, internal equity, and geographical
location.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee the accounting, accounts payable and corporate card,
revenue and receipting, payroll, and audit functions and ensure
that staff responsible for each of these areas stay updated on
non-profit accounting regulations and best practices, ensuring the
organization's financial practices remain compliant and
efficient.
- Maintain vendor relationships for these functions and
periodically evaluate the need for internal resources vs.
outsourced capacity.
- Implement policies and standards, to ensure complete, timely,
and accurate entry of financial transactions to facilitate
financial reports for internal and external stakeholders on a
monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
- Ensure that staff responsible for functional areas maintain
written procedures, system manuals, and training resources as well
as stay abreast of new standards or best practices for their areas
of individual expertise.
- Prepare and oversee the organization's GAAP financial
statements and other regulatory reporting (e.g. IRS Form 990,
lobbying reports), ensuring accuracy and compliance with applicable
standards.
- Serve as Finance subject matter expert and liaise with
Operations Leads on considerations for cross-functional projects,
including implications to procedures for financial data entry and
GAAP/regulatory reporting.
- Manage the reconciliation process, ensuring that all financial
data is accurate, and discrepancies are promptly resolved.
- Assist in audit preparation, working closely with external
auditors to provide necessary documentation and information.
- Prepare schedules and support documents for the annual audit,
ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and accounting
standards.
- Develop and implement corrective action plans to address
control issues identified during the audit.
- Maintain knowledge of all non-profit tax and accounting rules
and regulations and recommend adjustments to policies and
procedures to ensure continued compliance.
- Support the Chief Financial Officer with treasury management,
including providing timely information to facilitate cash
forecasting, monitor debt, and make investing decisions.
- Travel to D.C. Office 3-4 times per year.SUPERVISION:This
position will directly supervise the organization's Accounting and
Revenue Operations teams and also partner with the Financial
Planning & Analysis team and Donor Operations team.QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field required. CPA
required. MBA or Master's in finance/accounting welcomed.
- At least (8) eight to (10) ten years of experience with
responsibility for accounting and financial management, preferably
in a non-profit environment.
- At least (5) five years of experience in a supervisory or
management position.
- Significant experience working with, presenting to senior
management, and working with external auditors.
- Executes with the highest of standards and quality; operates
with an unquestioned level of integrity and personal
character.
- In-depth, comprehensive understanding of accounting in
accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP),
applicable regulations, and policies and procedures as well as
experience with federal grants and implementation of OMB Uniform
Guidance.
- High comfort level utilizing financial applications and
accounting software to enhance and automate monthly and year-end
financial closings, reporting, and analysis (e.g., Great Plains,
Financial Edge, Sage or Hyperion).
- High sense of urgency with a hands-on approach combined with
the ability to provide leadership, work prioritization, and
structure in a dynamic environment.
- Strong and effective leader, people developer, and team
player.
- Direct and concise communication skills. Active listener.
Ability to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at
all levels including finance and non-finance managers.
- Possess strong quantitative and analytical skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (particularly with Microsoft
