Brief Description of Duties
The University of the District of Columbia, College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) seeks candidates for a faculty member in Nutrition and Dietetics. The ideal candidate will have a strong Biochemistry, Nutritional Biochemistry or Experimental Nutrition background and teaching Nutrition and Dietetics students. This position requires the faculty member to:


  • Teach undergraduate and graduate biochemistry related courses to Nutrition and Dietetics students.
  • Participate in scholarly activities in the field of nutrition by conducting and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Initiate, build, and sustain a nationally recognized, innovative, and externally funded research program that supports the Department of Health, Nursing and Nutrition and College including land-grant activities.
  • Engage students in research activities.
  • Work with students to plan and implement effective leadership development opportunities both in the classroom and outside of the classroom.
  • Serve as an advisor for capstone projects.



    Essential Duties and Responsibilities


    • Utilize a variety of assessment techniques to ensure achievement of student learning outcomes.
    • Demonstrate a familiarity with a variety of instructional delivery systems and methods, including on-line learning, social media, portfolios to provide educational content and opportunities supported by evidence-based research and individual expertise.
    • Work collaboratively with the Department Chair, Associate Dean for Academic Programs, Program Director, Program faculty, other academic units, CAUSES land-grant programs as well as with District of Columbia (DC) agencies and service providers.
    • Perform student advisement, hold office hours, and perform course reviews with appropriate corrective/enhancement actions.
    • Contribute to the University's land-grant mission through outreach and engagement with students, Cooperative Extension, and key community stakeholders.

      Minimum Job Requirements

      • Research-focused doctoral degree in the areas of Biochemistry, Nutritional Biochemistry, or Experimental Nutrition.
      • Previous experience in teaching Nutrition and Dietetics students preferred.
      • Strong interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills
      • Proven record of teaching, research, program planning and problem-solving skills
      • Familiarity with or ability to become familiar with the urban land-grant university system and its dual mission or academic excellence and community outreach.



        A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:

      • An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and
      • At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education.

        Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.
        When formal teaching experience is limited or absent, the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.

        Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training(OPT).



        Residency Preference:A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.


        Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.



        Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a satisfactory backgroundinvestigation is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
